Oilers Post Big Marks at SVSU
University Center, Mich. - The University of Findlay swim and dive teams capped off a record-setting weekend at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center, competing against Saginaw Valley State and Northern Michigan. Over two days of competition, the Oilers broke multiple school records and earned a combined 17 NCAA Division II qualifying standards, including one automatic bid to the national championships.
On Saturday, sophomore Sebastian Camacho delivered a historic performance in the men's 1650-yard freestyle, setting a new school record with a time of 15:11.35. The swim not only topped the podium but also met the NCAA Division II "A" standard, securing Camacho's spot at the national championship meet. In that same race, Camacho set a new program record for the 1000-yard free, completing that portion of the race in 9:14.32.
Camacho also set a school record in the men's 200-yard freestyle on Friday, winning in 1:36.85 and earning an NCAA B cut. Freshman Juan David Blandon Torres joined him under the B standard in the same event with a time of 1:39.09.
Senior Emily Mears-Bentley added to the record-breaking weekend with an NCAA B cut in the women's 200-yard butterfly, winning in 2:00.89. Blandon Torres matched the feat in the men's 200 fly, finishing first in 1:49.28.
Sophie Busby, while not an NCAA mark, did set a new program record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:23.26.
The Oilers continued to rack up NCAA B cuts throughout Saturday's events:
- Women's 400-yard medley relay (Sofia Lesmes Montes, Katie Susi, Mears-Bentley, Troie Grubbs) | 3:44.53
- Men's 1650-yard freestyle | Matteo Filippi (15:36.22)

- Women's 100-yard freestyle | Troie Grubbs (51.52)

- Blandon Torres (200 free)
- Grubbs (50 free)
- Mears-Bentley and Marrugo (100 fly)
- Olivia Scheibelhoffer (100 free)
- Keener (100 back)
- Katie Susi (100 breaststroke)
Both Findlay relay squads closed the weekend with wins in the 400-yard freestyle relay on Friday and the 200-yard freestyle relay on Saturday. The men's 200 free relay team of Blandon Torres, Zein Kawas, Keener and Marrugo posted a time of 1:21.62, while the women's team of Grubbs, Mateyak, Smith and Mears-Bentley won in 1:35.11.
Despite the strong performances, Findlay narrowly fell to Saginaw Valley State in both team scores. SVSU edged the women's team 112-111 and the men's team 120-111.
The Oilers will return to the pool on November 15 with a home tri-meet against Hillsdale and Lewis in Sink Natatorium.
