Theta Chi Fraternity Makes $50,000 Donation for Scholarships
The Theta Chi social fraternity at the University of Findlay has donated $50,000 to its scholarship fund, reinforcing efforts to provide new opportunities for future generations of Oilers.
Stephen Kinn ’94, David Hinds ‘84, and Ken Armstrong, ’85 ’08, all brothers with the Eta Mu chapter, helped to coordinate the gift. “The Eta Mu Alumni Association wanted to make a statement to both the University and the Findlay community that we appreciate the support they offer, and we anticipate making a difference in the lives of the young men who seek an experience during their college experience that goes beyond casual,” they explained.
The Theta Chi Fraternity Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2012 with a $10,000 gift. They decided to expand the endowment so the annual scholarship would be substantial. “We decided to do this because we all value the experience we had as Theta Chis,” they noted. “The importance of an endowed scholarship is to perpetuate the ideals of the fraternity. More important than the fraternity is the success of the University at large. Supporting the initiative of the University to supply financial assistance to its students is a mission we support.” Scholarship awards are made annually to a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
The chapter is the longest consecutively active men’s fraternity at UF and has members from all over the world and the majority of the United States. The local chapter, located at 316 Howard Street, has 585 brothers as of this year, including current members and alumni.
Marcia Sloan Latta, Ed.D., vice president of University Advancement, thanked the brothers for their continued generosity. “Our Theta Chi alumni around the country are engaged in many philanthropic efforts,” she noted. “Through my years at UF, I have met so many wonderful members supporting their alma mater who also are involved in their local communities as well.”
The fraternity’s maxim is “Alma Mater First and Theta Chi for Alma Mater,” and refers to one of the founding ideals of Theta Chi: loyalty to one’s college or university over the course of a lifetime. The fraternity brothers said they appreciate their unique experience as undergraduates due to Theta Chi membership. “Spending time with each other and learning from each other’s experience provided an opportunity to build lasting relationships – relationships that have lasted a lifetime.” Fraternity members celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Greek organization last fall with a golf outing, campus tours, a reception with UF President Katherine Fell, Ph.D., and more.
