Wes King, D.M.A. serves as the director of the University of Findlay’s Oiler Bands. While he typically works with college students, he took the time to work with high school students from Toledo Christian School, as part of a free band clinic open to all area high schools. “Teaching is a village,” said King. “If I can do anything to help a local high school program, it makes the community of northwest Ohio that much stronger.”

Konnor Masell serves as the band director for Toledo Christian Schools, and in his first year, he’s hoping to make music both fun and educational. As part of a band trip, the students stopped at University of Findlay to take part in the free clinic, before heading down to Dayton to see the Blue Man Group. “I think it’s super important to make sure my students are exposed to things like this. They don’t know what they don’t know, and if no one takes the time to show them what college band is like, they may never know. It’s my job to give them that opportunity,” said Masell.

One of those students making a trip to UF was senior Claire Davis, who plays clarinet in her high school band. While she loves having Masell as her band director, she admits that there are differences in personalities and styles between him and UF band director Wes King. “Dr. King talked about focusing on your playing style, being intentional with the way you play, and going out of your way to be better. Just because you can play the music on the page, doesn’t mean you’re fully incorporating dynamics and technique,” said Davis.

Wes King and the University of Findlay’s Oiler Bands welcome all high school bands to plan a visit to campus for a free clinic. For those band directors interested in making a visit to the University of Findlay, please reach out to Wes King directly by emailing wes.king@findlay.edu.
