Freed Lecture Series Presents: “Life Lessons from Africa” with Dr. Marie Louden-Hanes
Josh Eilola Posted On October 9, 2024
University of Findlay professor emerita of art history, Marie Louden-Hanes, Ph.D., will share her experiences traveling in Africa on a U.S. State Department grant to support aspiring African business entrepreneurs. The talk includes Louden-Hanes’s photographs documenting the people and places visited as well as stills from the documentary film made about the trip.
The event will be held Friday, October 18, 2024 in the Winebrenner TLB auditorium. The lecture starts at 7:30 p.m. West African griot music will play beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Freed Lecture Series is free and open to the public.
In 2011, Louden-Hanes traveled to Africa on a U.S. State Department grant, part of a four-person team representing University of Findlay. Also part of the team were Dr. Julius Coles, former director of Africare and senior official in the U.S. foreign service; Dr. Paul Sears, emeritus professor of business and former dean of UF’s college of business, and Mike Mallet (‘88), CEO of LiveShopper. The team traveled with professional film-makers to Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal, interviewing aspiring entrepreneurs in each location. Those individuals with outstanding business plans were invited to come to University of Findlay in May 2012 for a month of study.
Louden-Hanes will share lessons she learned during these travels and from the individuals she met through this cross-cultural experience. “We created a connection among individuals from across the five countries, fostering respect for each other’s cultural traditions,” she said. “This experience showed me how our world and perspective change when we say, ‘Here I am. Send me.’”
The Freed Contemporary Christian Lecture Series was endowed in 2010 by the late Dr. and Mrs. DeBow Freed. Visiting speakers should be guided by the ideals epitomized by Dr. and Mrs. Freed. These ideals include a Christian-centered ethos, respect for multiple faith traditions in an increasingly pluralistic world; civility of expression; excellence and rigor of thought; humility, compassion, and service.
This event is free and open to the public. Those unable to attend in person can join via livestream at www.youtube.com/@UFTVFindlay.
