Rougnecks Kick Off Season at Pioneer Open
Glenville, W. Va. - The University of Findlay wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the Pioneer Open on Saturday, finishing eighth overall with 77.5 team points in a competitive field of 14 programs.
Leading the way for the Oilers was Billy Smith, who claimed the championship at 125 pounds. Smith dominated his bracket, earning two pins and three decision victories, including a hard-fought 12-10 win over Belmont Abbey's K. Simpson in the opening round and a 15-10 decision over Ashland's L. Acuna in the finals.
Three other Oilers placed fifth in their respective weight classes. Nate Knowlton, competing at 133 pounds, bounced back from an early loss to win five straight matches, including a 15-5 major decision over UIndy's B. Lybarger and a 13-8 decision over Glenville State's M. McAfee. At 149 pounds, Micah Cotrell impressed with two technical falls and a major decision, ultimately securing fifth place after a narrow 13-12 win over UNC Pembroke's T. Nelson. Giulian Bodiu, wrestling at 285 pounds, showcased his power with four pins, including a lightning-fast 38-second fall over Millersville's K. Scheuerman, en route to a fifth-place finish.
Ronnie Thomas III earned two wins at 197 pounds, including a 19-2 technical fall over UNC Pembroke's B. Gadson and a 1-0 decision over Frostburg State's N. McCarthy before falling in the semifinals. Diego Chavez picked up a 9-1 major decision over Millersville's R. Oakes at 157 pounds, while Gavin Idleman earned a narrow 8-7 decision over Frostburg State's M. Matysek at 174 pounds.
Glenville State took home the team title with 174 points, followed by Belmont Abbey with 141 and Indianapolis with 121.
