University of Findlay held its annual Health and Wellness Fair on September 21st, marking 20 years of attention to preventative care. Students, faculty and staff, and community members visited more than 20 vendor booths to learn about healthy eating habits, the side effects of smoking, and getting flu shots and vaccinations.
“It’s awesome that we get to promote preventative care, because oftentimes it’s, ‘Oh…I’m sick. I’m going to go to the doctor now.’ Today, we are helping people to prevent themselves from getting sick with the flu in the first place,” said second-year physician assistant (PA) student Abbie Lantrip. While first-year PA students were providing free blood pressure checks, Abbie and other second-year students were providing free flu shots to students. “It’s really good practice for us. We appreciate the ability to give flu shots to students and community members because it gives us the chance to practice our skills before we head out to clinicals,” Lantrip said.
Other vendors included the Ohio State Highway Patrol who brought their Fatal Vision goggles that imitate the effects of alcohol, chiropractors talking about preventative care through regularly scheduled adjustments, and counseling services talking about the importance of focusing on mental health. The number of vendors and variety of services on display is something Tara Smith, Director of Health Services, is extremely proud of. “Coming out of the pandemic, it’s so important to let everyone know what resources they can utilize to improve their health and overall well-being,” she said.
University of Findlay will continue to focus on preventative care with Flu Shot and COVID vaccination events scheduled for October. For more information on the University of Findlay and its events, visit www.findlay.edu.
