Trading in Books for Dance Shoes – Brigitte Galauner, UF College Librarian
University of Findlay is known for its small campus community, hands-on learning opportunities for students, and strong science, health professions, education, and business programs. This series takes a different approach, highlighting the lives of four University faculty and staff members, and showcasing their talents outside the classroom.
In our second installment in the series, we take a look at the life of Brigitte Galauner. Serving as the University of Findlay’s College Librarian for Business, Education, and Social Sciences, Galauner spends most of her time in the quiet setting of UF’s Shafer Library. Outside the walls of campus, Galauner surrounds herself with the sounds of music, practicing and performing dance. Whether it’s tap, jazz, ballet, or modern dance, Galauner stays busy, even performing in the Black Swamp Fine Arts School’s performance of Masha & the Nutcracker.
Dance has always been a part of her life, starting with ballet and tap classes at age four. From there she joined Revolutions Dance Academy’s competition team in middle school and high school. Years of dancing eventually led to Galauner receiving a dance scholarship during her undergraduate studies at the College of Wooster. Now an employee at the University of Findlay, she continues to dance at 2-3 anime conventions each year, and participates in around four competitions per year.
Galauner admits that tap dancing is her favorite style, and believes it’s her strongest dance. She also admits that dancing as an adult isn’t getting any easier, “As an adult it is quite difficult to keep up the hobby of dancing. Many performance opportunities are for students 18 and younger, unless you are an adult professional. As a result, I have had to get more creative and come up with more unconventional ways to dance,” she said.
Despite the struggles of dancing as an adult, Galauner shows no signs of stopping. This year alone, she performed at anime and pop culture conventions, and danced at regional competitions throughout the state. She hopes to continue her passion of dancing with additional events in 2023.
