University of Findlay partnered with Marathon Petroleum Company to educate more than 20 College Credit Plus (CCP) students from New Riegel High School on Friday, September 29. The first-ever Career Exploration Day was an opportunity to educate CCP students on what career options they have when they pursue a business degree.
Students talked about traditional business careers including marketing and finance but took the time to research non-traditional careers as well. Marathon executives took time to answer questions from students in a panel setting, helping them map out their career paths.
“I think this provides students with a pathway that they can visualize the different options they have and how to get there. We are giving them those options, they’re doing research, and they get the chance to ask Marathon employees direct questions,” said Beverly Dowling, Marathon Petroleum Company Accounting Coordination and Recruitment Manager. Dowling and her colleagues answered questions about internships, which classes they should take, and which programs they should focus on.
Following the panel discussion, students had lunch on campus with business faculty members, toured campus, and had the opportunity to sit in on classes and take part in group projects.
By taking College Credit Plus classes in high school, students not only prepare themselves for college-level learning, they can also shorten their college careers and save money in the long run. Events like the Career Exploration Day serve as an opportunity to help these same students narrow down their career path, or possibly open their eyes to alternative options.
“This event provides direction. It gives students the knowledge on other programs that are out there besides the ones they typically hear about like accounting, marketing, and finance. We want to encourage them to research and learn about career options that are not often talked about, including data analytics, pipeline controllers, and operation auditors,” said Kirby Overton, dean of the College of Business.
