University of Findlay Alumna Joins UF Retiree to Spruce Up University Greenhouse

University of Findlay’s Brewer Frost greenhouse was housed in the Frost Science Center for 23 years, before it was moved to the corner of Davis and Morey streets in 2015. The goal of the greenhouse has always been to renew student interest in botany, inspire faculty and staff, and offer a location for the public to visit and observe its widely-varied contents.
That goal was taken on personally by Elizabeth Fisher, ’21, who helped manage the greenhouse when she was a nursing student at the University of Findlay. Fisher said she envisioned the greenhouse as a place for students to go and study, and for the community to visit and learn about all the plants being grown inside. Graduation came quickly, and Fisher was unable to accomplish her goal. Now a nurse at Blanchard Valley Hospital, she continues to assist the University greenhouse as a volunteer.
During her time in the University of Findlay’s community symphonic ensemble, Fisher met former University of Findlay art professor, Sharon Hammer Baker, MA. The two discussed the greenhouse and developed a plan to spruce up the University greenhouse, and further assist in accomplishing Fisher’s goal. “When the greenhouse was moved, it was just the greenhouse and a supply barn. The hallway connecting the two buildings was put in after, and it looked detached and uninviting. Sharon and I talked and decided to bring the empty hallway to life,” said Fisher.
The two began painting and drawing on the walls, creating a connecting theme full of trees, leaves, and vines. As people walk into the building, they immediately notice hand-drawn leaves and trees that were done by Baker. Fisher, Baker, and a few volunteers then took the time to paint the hallway. Nearly complete, the goal is to invite community members and local schools to explore the recently renovated space, and host future events in the greenhouse. One upcoming event is the April 14th plant sale, allowing people to purchase plants that have grown in the greenhouse throughout the year.
