Branden Ferguson Posted On January 11, 2023
The University of Findlay will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a weeklong celebration. The community is invited to join the University as students, faculty, and staff host days of service, open dialogue, a silent march, and a mobile food pantry.
Campus will close on January 16th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, before returning to campus on Tuesday, January 17th. Running from Tuesday, Jan. 17 to Friday, Jan. 20, the University of Findlay welcomes community members to support a toiletry drive. People are asked to donate soap, shampoo, toothpaste/brush, or deodorant. Items will be collected in the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU), the Center for Student Life and College of Business (CBSL), and at the Buford Center (located at 1222 N. Cory St.). Items collected will be made available to community members in need during the week’s mobile food pantry.
Events continue Wednesday, Jan. 18th with a silent march at 11:30 a.m. Open to the public, community members and UF students, faculty, and staff will march from the Buford Center (1222 N. Cory St) to the University of Findlay’s TLB Auditorium located in the Winebrenner Building (950 N. Main St). Guests in attendance will be greeted by guest speaker Odell Bizzell Jr., who will help honor and celebrate the life of Dr. King. Bizzell Jr. is a nationally known blogger, speaker, author, internet personality, and expert in training leaders to overcome racism.
The conversation continues Thursday, Jan. 19th at noon, with an open-dialogue conversation at the University of Findlay’s Buford Center. Open to the public, University staff members will facilitate the event, allowing students, community members, and others to discuss Dr. King, reflect on the speech of Odell Bizzell Jr., and to discuss the future for potential change.
Wrapping up the week, the University of Findlay will host an additional day of service, with a mobile food pantry on Saturday, Jan. 21. The event will start at 6:30 a.m. and will take place in the Davis Street building parking lot (300 Davis St.). Volunteers will be helping to distribute toiletries to those in need and are expected to distribute up to 10,000 pounds of groceries. Partnering with Findlay’s CHOPIN Hall, people in need can register online to receive groceries. For those interested in volunteering their time to distribute items, please reach out to Kaleb Brown at brownk8@findlay.edu. Space is limited.
