University of Findlay Choir to Perform Concert Tour in Czech Republic
University of Findlay’s choir students will travel more than 4,000 miles from February 25 to March 4th 2023 for spring break, performing for the people of Czech Republic. The trip will consist of two separate concerts performed by more than 20 UF students, and UF Director of Choral Activities, SeaHwa Jung, D.M.A.
The opportunity presented itself following Jung’s visit to University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic this past spring. During his visit, Jung conducted the university’s choir and orchestra as a guest conductor, and taught a few classes. Before leaving, he asked the university if they would be willing to partner with his University of Findlay students, to which they gladly agreed.
Jung informed his students earlier this year, and asked how many of them would be interested in traveling to the Czech Republic. “When I asked them, almost everyone’s hands shot up. When I asked if they had a passport, many of them put their hands down,” said Jung. Since the announcement, students have been working to get their passports, and Jung has begun planning the trip and educating students. “They’re very excited! I introduced the country, the cities, and the people over there, and the students are very excited!”
To keep the costs of the trip down, Jung has decided to not use a touring company, and instead will plan the trip himself. The only thing he has asked his students to pay for is their airfare, and money for casual spending. “I have asked the students to cover their airfare, but other expenses like accommodations and some meals will be covered. It’s going to be a big chunk of money, but we are very grateful for the donations and support from our donors, including money from the Curtain Raisers,” Jung said.
Students will arrive Sunday, February 26, landing in Prague. On Monday, Jung and his students will rehearse with the students in the Czech Republic for a joint performance later in the week. Over the next few days, students will perform various concert pieces both for community members, and on the campus of Hradec Králové. Before heading home, Jung has set aside two days for his students to tour the capital of Prague.
Jung described this trip overseas as a first for the University of Findlay’s choral department. “This is the first concert tour we have had after 40+ years of having the program,” he said. Jung hopes to develop a partnership between the two universities, allowing their students to perform in the U.S., and for future trips back to the Czech Republic.
