The Language and Culture Department at University of Findlay will be hosting its 2nd Annual Day of the Dead Altar at Shafer Library, running from October 31st to November 7th. This vibrant and meaningful tradition is a celebration of life and a tribute to loved ones who have passed away.
The Day of the Dead, known as Día de los Muertos, is a multi-day holiday deeply rooted in Mexican culture. It brings together friends, family, and community members to commemorate the lives of those who have left this world. It is a time for healing and remembering, an age-old tradition that has endured for nearly three millennia. Originating with Indigenous civilizations in Mexico, the holiday evolved to incorporate elements of Catholicism and Christianity after the Spanish colonization of the Aztec empire in the 16th century. Today, it coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. The celebration spans two days: November 1st, referred to as the Day of Innocents (Día de los Inocentes) or Day of the Little Angels (Día de los Angelitos), and November 2nd, known as the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) or Day of the Deceased (Día de los Difuntos).
Participants are welcome to place a photo of a deceased loved one on the altar provided within Shafer Library. Additionally, participants may leave a favorite food, item, or trinket that the person enjoyed in life.
