Pharmacy Professor by Day…Punk Rock Band Member by Night – Timothy Burkart, Pharm.D.
Branden Ferguson Posted On January 6, 2023
University of Findlay is known for its small campus community, hands-on learning opportunities for students, and strong science, health professions, education, and business programs. This series takes a different approach, highlighting the lives of four University faculty and staff members, and showcasing their talents outside the classroom.
The first person in our series, is Timothy Burkart, Pharm.D. Burkart works with students in the University of Findlay’s College of Pharmacy as an associate professor. When he’s not in the classroom, Burkart is playing drums in his punk rock band, commonly referred to as L.A.D’s. The band consists of four middle-aged dads that consider themselves to be “lame, silly, and goofy.” The band also just put out a new album titled “Greetings From Nowhere, Ohio.”
Burkart said he first started playing drums when he was around 13 or 14, and even played in bands with friends since he was 16. Turning 42 this summer, he never thought he’d still be in a band and playing music. “Many of our songs are about stuff we go through in our current stages in life,” said Burkart. “It’s songs about being a parent and trying to figure that out, songs about working, trying to hold on to our youth but still adulting well, our parents aging, losing loved ones, and relationships. It’s pretty much songs about life as a middle-aged dad.”
Between working as a University professor, to being the drummer in a punk rock band, Burkart’s schedule is “hectic,” but he says his family has been his rock from the beginning. “They’ve been really supportive, and I honestly couldn’t ask for more. My family has stickers, shirts, and other merchandise and they have told me they like the songs.” When asked if his students show him the same support, he admitted that he hasn’t informed his students about his band and passion for music…until now.
