University of Findlay Graduate Becomes Expert Witness

University of Findlay graduates leave campus with many titles. Some students become teachers, some become broadcasters and communication specialists, and others add Pharm.D. to their name and become pharmacists. Brittany Borzych ’18 graduated with degrees in Forensic Science and Chemistry, and was recently given the title of “Expert Witness” while providing testimony on behalf of the Indiana State Police Department.
Borzych took her experience from the University of Findlay, and the countless hours of hands-on learning and time in the lab, and joined the Drug Unit at the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Regional Laboratory. As part of her job as one of the lab’s forensic scientists, Borzych is asked to provide her scientific findings when called upon by the courts. She thanks her professors at the University of Findlay, and says the experience she had at UF helps her every day. “Being in small classrooms helped me to really connect with my professors and have the courage to ask questions. This also provided more independence in learning and exploring the instrumentation that I currently use in my position as a forensic scientist,” she said.
Borzych’s first encounter with the University of Findlay came when she was in high school, when she attended one of the University’s camps for Forensic Science. From there she explored the ability to continue swimming while studying for her degree. In the end, Borzych chose to become an Oiler, receiving scholarships for both academics and athletics. Once on campus, the hands-on learning and experience of her professors led to her future success. “My professors like Dr. Tice, Dr. Kim, and Dr. Lucas all had connections in the community, which helped me to explore internship opportunities,” said Borzych.
With the support of her professors, and smaller classroom sizes allowing for experiential learning, Borzych says students are being set up for success. “The University is growing tremendously, and new opportunities are arising every day. The school has the ability to adapt to specifics for students, and professors have connections with people outside the University. They all want to help you succeed and go the extra mile to help you out,” she said.
