On September 3, 2024, a group of 18 students from the University of Findlay participated in a tour of the newly completed Rumpke Recycling and Resource Center in Columbus, Ohio. Organized by Ben Taylor, Assistant Vice President of Facilities Services and Capital Projects, the tour provided students with a unique opportunity to learn about the recycling process and the importance of sustainability.
During the visit, students explored the 223,000-square-foot facility, the largest of its kind in North America, capable of processing 250,000 tons of material annually. “Understanding the recycling process is crucial for our students, particularly those in environmental and sustainability studies,” said Kim Lichtveld, Associate Professor and organizer of the trip. “This experience offered valuable insights into the operations of modern recycling facilities and the impact of waste management on sustainability efforts.”
“We were excited to share this experience with the broader university community,” said Justin Richardson, an instructor in Environmental Safety and Occupational Health. “It was not just about seeing the facility; it was about understanding how our actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.”
