University of Findlay Students Recognized in Local Photography Show

University of Findlay students participated in Art Space Lima’s regional photography show, competing against professional and amateur artists. The show is something Spencer Cunningham, M.F.A. has encouraged his UF photography students to compete in for the past 11 years. “I think it is very affirming and important for students to realize that they are doing competitive level work. I don’t think they would quite believe it if they were only told that by the teacher,” said Cunningham.
This year, three current students, two former UF students, and Cunningham himself entered photographs into the show. Taking home the title of “Best of Show,” was current University of Findlay student, Dominique Ysquierdo. “I was shocked and completely surprised. There were so many strong pieces in this show. I was just grateful to have my photos on the wall next to theirs,” said Ysquierdo. Dominque’s photograph will join other award winners in the Art Space Lima Juried Photography Exhibition through February 4th.
When asked why his students do so well, and what Findlay’s photography minor and classes offer, Cunningham said, “A unique aspect of our photography program here is the studio lighting component. We have a house for a lighting studio with state-of-the-art professional lighting equipment, helping students to broaden their photographic experiences.” While Findlay does not offer photography as a major, students in graphic design, marketing, and art often add the minor and take photography classes. Ysquierdo is an art major with photography and art history minors. For her, the studio is nice, but she believes Findlay’s professors are the difference, “the University of Findlay and its professors are there for students, helping them grow and succeed in their dreams,” said Ysquierdo.
Seeing his students being passionate about photography, and the pride they have when showing off their works of art, is what keeps Cunningham encouraging his students to compete. Some of Cunningham’s students have even taken their passion for photography outside the classroom, “We have had quite a few students start their own photography business or be hired by an existing company to photograph for them. We have even had students’ photographs published in an international photography magazine.” Cunningham’s efforts have encouraged Ysquierdo to teach art and photography at the college level.
