Budweiser’s iconic Clydesdale horses travel the country each year, spending at least ten months on the road. Last week, 10 Clydesdales and their familiar red, white, and gold wagon were housed at the University of Findlay’s western equestrian farm for their week-long stay. Accompanied by their three 50-foot Budweiser semi-trailers, and their Dalmatian dogs, the Budweiser horses and their team made the farm their home base to prepare for a series of local events.
“About every five years we house the Budweiser Clydesdales for events hosted by the Anheuser-Bush distributer Beerco. This is the third time they’ve been here, as they were here in 2014, 2019, and now in 2023,” said Jake Bowman, University of Findlay farm business manager.
During their stay, the farm buzzed with excitement. The horses were visible to students walking through the barns, and classes watched the one-ton animals as they were readied to be hitched to the wagon. “I think it speaks to our farm here, the quality of the facilities, the quality of the program, and the people that we have here,” said Bowman. “I think for students – especially for the incoming freshman who just finished up their first week of classes, to see the Budweiser Clydesdales on campus is a point of pride.”
While on campus, the horses were fed, washed, groomed, and their manes were braided. Budweiser’s blacksmith was flown in to shoe the horses, and a mobile truck wash was brought in to clean each of the semis and trailers.
Throughout the week, the horses were put on display with a customer appreciation event on Wednesday, a Beerco employee appreciation event at the Hancock County fairgrounds on Thursday, two events on Friday at the University of Findlay, and a final trip to the village of Wayne’s fire department on Saturday before leaving UF on Sunday.
