UF to host Veterans Day Observance November 9
The University of Findlay is proud to host a Veterans Day observance at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 9.
Area residents and the UF community are invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at the Veterans Honor Wall in the Center for Student Life and College of Business, 233 Davis Street.
“Please join us as we honor the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices made by University of Findlay veterans,” said Samuel Yates, ’16, president of the Alumni Board of Governors, which is coordinating the event.
The guest speakers will be financial advisors Titus Allen ’02 and Rodney Kramp, who are coordinators of Silent Watch, a Findlay organization dedicated to raising awareness about veteran suicide and helping veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In September, Allen-Kramp Wealth Management organized a day when volunteers each stood for 22 silent minutes in front of the Hancock County Courthouse for a “Silent Watch” to show veterans they are not alone.
Silent Watch began in 2007 at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Before Veterans Day, the base commander asked for volunteers to stand a two-man watch for 30 minutes at the main flagpole in honor of veteran brothers for a 24-hour total. After returning home in 2008, two unit members took their own lives, prompting the beginning of Silent Watch in Ohio.
Boy Scout Troop 319 of Findlay also will participate in the UF ceremony, presenting the colors. The National Anthem and “God Bless America” will be sung by UF senior Zachary Zeleznik, and “Taps” will be performed by Mikayla Holtz, a junior UF Bands member. UF senior Samantha Adkins will give the invocation and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
The ceremony will conclude with a reading of the more than 760 names on the Veterans Honor Wall.
For those who cannot attend, the ceremony will be live-streamed online.
The Veterans Honor Wall was a gift to the University on behalf of the Class of 1966’s 50th anniversary.
“The wall is a living tribute that serves as a constant reminder on our campus of the many sacrifices that our service men and women have made to give us the freedoms we enjoy today,” Yates explained. “We are honored to call these veterans Oilers.”
If you could not attend and would like a copy of the ceremony program mailed to you, please call the Wolfe Center for Alumni, Parents & Friends at 419-434-4008.
