University of Findlay Awards First Degree to Findlay High School College Credit Plus Student
Only one of the 861 graduates University of Findlay celebrated on May 10 included a local student who had yet to graduate from Findlay High School and was attending his senior prom later that evening.
Simon Tanner crossed the stage earning his associate of arts in general studies degree thanks to his participation in College Credit Plus (CCP). He is the first public high school student to earn such an honor from the University through its popular College Credit Plus (CCP) program. Simon participated in graduation ceremonies shortly after his senior lacrosse game at Findlay High School and right before attending his high school prom. Tanner earned his high school diploma later in the month.
“Simon is part of the rapidly growing CCP population of students at the University of Findlay and joins the wave of students across the state of Ohio taking advantage of free coursework at private Universities like ours,” shared Rebecca Hillman, director of College Credit Plus. With 48 partner schools representing over 2,000 CCP students across the state, University of Findlay is the largest private provider of CCP education in Ohio. “While Simon was our first CCP graduate, we know there will be many more to walk across our commencement stage and through our beloved Arch upon graduation,” she said.
Ohio’s College Credit Plus program provides students in grades 7-12 the opportunity to earn college credits prior to high school graduation. The program promotes rigorous academic pursuits for eligible middle, high school, and home-schooled students. Taking a college course from the University of Findlay through College Credit Plus is free for eligible Ohio students and includes no additional costs for tuition, books, or associated fees. The program is popular not only for its cost-savings but also for the personal growth opportunities for students.
“I got to challenge myself and learn with older students which helped me advance academically and in maturity because of the people that I was around,” shared Simon Tanner. “I would say that CCP offers so many opportunities for students to learn what college is like so they know what they need to look for in their college search to find success when they are in college. I always tell people you will never regret taking college courses over your high school career,” added Tanner.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with students like Tanner to help them get a head start on their higher education goals well before they graduate high school,” continued Hillman. “Our courses are convenient and robust with options for in-person, on-campus, and online instruction for students. It is a win-win program for dedicated high school students like Tanner and for the University of Findlay,” concluded Hillman.
University of Findlay’s CCP program is just one of two Ohio programs to hold national accreditation from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).
