The University of Findlay’s Lea Gallery is proud to present Spacewalkers, an exhibition by internationally recognized artist Stephanie Rond of Columbus, Ohio. The exhibit will be on view October 6–31, with a public reception on Wednesday, October 22, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.

Rond is known for subverting and reimagining traditional expectations of space, place, gender, and power. Her practice activates female narratives in uncommon spaces and builds communities through creative collaboration. She develops street art and canvas paintings through a deeply tactile, materials-driven process of designing, cutting, and painting impressions on layers of paper and photographs.

Inspired by the “spacewalkers” who repair the Hubble telescope, Spacewalkers explores figures who exist in liminal spaces—both human and otherworldly, spaces of creative possibility and personal peril. These figures tell a different story about the purpose of public art, as well as the women and marginalized people who are too often excluded from participation and representation.

The series re-imagines what—and who—deserves to be made visible in public space. Traditionally, monuments exist to reaffirm and reinforce power. Spacewalkers instead proposes an “anti-monumental” approach: street art installations that resist and rebuke the assumption that public space exists to exalt the already powerful.

Rond is an internationally recognized painter whose work challenges conventions of gender, identity, and power. Her art has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces worldwide. More about her work can be found at www.stephanierond.com.
